Maskne

Maskne refers to acne breakouts that are a direct result of wearing a facial mask. The dermatological terms are acne mechanica.

The facial skin is irritated and sensitive.

Acne mechanica is generally triggered by pores being blocked by sweat, oil and makeup.

Longterm mask wearing, creates humidity and can cause acne. The friction of the mask can block pores, this leading to an acne breakout.

Patient who are prone to acne have an increased likelihood of getting Maskne but it should be noted that normal skin can present with this too.

With regards to the timeline of getting Maskne, it is patient dependent.

To help prevent and treat Maskne, the following measures may be helpful. If a person wears a cloth mask, it should be washed daily. If a disposable mask, it should be replaced as often as possible. It is a good idea to áir’ your face, if possible (When you are not in a social environment).

The skin can be sensitive and cleaning the skin with harsh products is not advisable. The face should be washed with a gentle cleanser and if necessary, the face should be washed with a product that contains Salicylic acid to help unclog pores.

Skin should be hydrated to help build a healthy skin barrier. Soothing products should be used todecreas/ prevent skin irritation.
